NORTHFIELD, Vt. – For the fifth year in a row, the Norwich University men's lacrosse team will join forces with Castleton University men's lacrosse for the Climb for Connor event on February 9th and 10th.
The Cadets will host their part of the 24-hour event in Shapiro Field House on the Hurley Rock Wall beginning on Saturday the 9th at noon and running continuously until noon on the 10th.
Climb for Connor was established in 2015 in memory of Connor Roberts, a Norwich lacrosse player who passed away from a sudden heart attack in June 2014 following his sophomore year. Roberts's ties to Castleton are strong, as his brother Ben played lacrosse and hockey at Castleton before graduating in 2014 and his sister Danielle was a member of the Spartan women's hockey team earlier this decade. In addition, the Roberts siblings have many friends both at Castleton and at Norwich.
The event consists of a 24-hour rock wall climbing marathon from Saturday the 9th at noon, through the night, until Sunday the 10th at noon. Throughout the 24 hours, someone from the men's lacrosse team will be on the wall climbing at all times. The climb benefits the CJR Memorial Fund, LTD, which awards high school students with scholarships to pursue higher education as well as aid youth sports programs in the St. Albans, Vt., area. A GoFundMe page has been set up at;
Castleton men's lacrosse will be holding their event on their campus at the same time as Norwich, as both teams will host separate events on their respective campuses in order to involve the most faculty, staff, and students for the event.
All are welcome at the event to climb, donate, or to simply support other climbers in their 24-hour show of support for Connor and his Memorial Fund. No climbing experience is necessary and all equipment is provided at no cost.
"Connor brought people together. Whether it was the Castleton and Norwich lacrosse programs or sports teams at Norwich, he was a bridge builder. We hope that this event carries on that legacy by having a diverse group of participants," Norwich defensive coordinator Nick Fischer commented.
All proceeds from the event will ensure Connor's memory will continue to touch the lives of others. Proceeds from the event will be given to the Roberts family in a ceremony following the match between Castleton and Norwich, to take place this season at Haynes Family Stadium on Wednesday, April 17th, starting at 6 p.m.
