Men's Lacrosse: Norwich defense shines in 11-6 victory over Rivier

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's lacrosse team bested Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Rivier University on Tuesday night, picking up the 11-6 victory on a rainy evening at Haynes Family Stadium.

The Raiders struck first with an unassisted Dylan McSparren goal right off a faceoff win, and the 1-0 Rivier lead held for 12 minutes until Cody Moore (Canton, N.Y.) notched a man-up goal off a feed from Payden Masaracchia (Enola, Pa.) to tie things up. The defenses settled in for the majority of the second quarter until Norwich rattled off three straight unanswered goals over the final five minutes to carry a 4-2 lead into half.

A dominant third quarter that saw five different Cadets score gave Norwich a 9-3 cushion, which is all the room the defensive unit needed to seal up the eventual 11-6 victory. Norwich forced 22 turnovers, 11 of them credited as caused. Christian Williams (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) and Peter Orlandella (Wayland, Mass.) anchored the defense and were credited with three caused turnovers each, while Brandon Milburn (Bridgewater, N.J.) made nine saves in net to improve to 4-0 in goal.

Cody Moore quietly netted a hat trick, his fourth in the last five games. Jack Anzalone (Ridgewood, N.J.) tallied three assists and Payden Masaracchia ended up with a goal and two assists on the day. Joseph Santangelo (Fallston, Md.) returned to form with a 14-18 day on faceoffs, as the Cadets outshot Rivier 45-28 on the day.

The Cadets improve to 6-4 overall and 4-1 within the GNAC, as the maroon and gold now sit third in the conference standings behind the Lasell Lasers and Saint Joseph's Monks and their spotless conference records. Next up is a road trip on Saturday afternoon to take on the Regis Pride at 3:30 PM.
