PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The #2 Norwich University men's rugby team took on UMass Lowell in a Rugby Northeast semifinal match at Providence College on Saturday.
The Cadets topped the Riverhawks 36-24 to stretch their conference unbeaten streak to 16 matches and advance to the Rugby Northeast Championship.
Norwich got on the board with an early try by junior prop Taualupe Tau (E. Palo Alto, Calif.) for a 5-0 lead. Junior flanker Austin Manhey (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) added a try that was converted by senior flyhalf Keegan Frick (Thornton, Pa.) for a 12-0 NU lead.
The Riverhawks rallied for two tries, converting one, to tie the match 12-12 before junior wing Korbin Wayton (Southlake, Texas) scored a clutch try on the final play of the half. Frick converted the try for a 19-12 NU lead at the intermission.
Senior lock Ryan Wagner (Newtown, Conn.) started the second half scoring with an unconverted try for a 24-12 edge, but UMass Lowell cut the lead to 24-19 with an unconverted try.
Senior scrumhalf Tom St. Pierre (Warwick, R.I.) added insurance for the Cadets with a try for a 29-19 score and junior center Joshua Johnson (Argyle, Texas) chipped in a try (converted by Frick) to extend the lead to 36-19.
The Riverhawks scored a try on the final play of the match for a 36-24 final.
Norwich advances to face Southern Connecticut State University tomorrow's Rugby Northeast Championship Match. That contest is slated for 1:00 p.m. The winner gains a first round bye in the 2017 USA Rugby Division II National Tournament.
