Men's Rugby: Norwich downs Roger Williams 41-24, wins 17th straight league game

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Norwich University men's rugby team won its 17th straight league game with a 41-24 win over Roger Williams in Rugby Northeast play on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Nate Rolling (Taylorsville, Utah) scored three tries to lead the Norwich offense as the Cadets won their second straight game and stayed perfect in Rugby Northeast play.

William Rambin (Fairfax, Va.) and Travis Bartniski (Houston, Texas) each scored a try as well for NU to round out the try scorers on the day. Jeffrey Minicucci (Bolton, Conn.) was a perfect 5-for-5 on conversions and added two penalty kicks to account for 16 points on the day.

Norwich (2-1, 2-0 Rugby Northeast) built up a 31-0 lead by halftime, but Roger Williams battled back in the second half to outscore the Cadets 24-10 in the second 40 minutes to make a game out of it.

Rolling opened the scoring with a try in the 10th minute with a successful conversion by Minicucci. Minicucci pushed the lead to 10-0 with a penalty kick after that. Rambin added his try with Minicucci's conversion to give the Cadets a 17-0 lead. Rolling scored again in the 30th minute to make it 24-0 and then Bartniski added his try in the 35th minute to round out the first-half scoring. 

Roger Williams got on the board in the 48th minute with a try to cut the lead to 31-5. Rolling make it 38-5 in the 48th minute with a Minicucci conversion. 

Roger Williams scored two straight tries to cut the lead down to 38-17 in the 55th and 65th minute. 

Minicucci hit another penalty kick in the 75th minute to give Norwich a 41-17 lead. The Hawks added one more try on the last play of the game with a successful conversion to finish off the scoring. 

Norwich won the B side game, 19-5 to improve to 2-0 as well.

Norwich will host Providence next Saturday at 2 p.m. on Parent and Family Weekend.
