OTTAWA - The Norwich University men's rugby team went 1-2-2 at the Ottawa 7s Tournament to open its 2019 spring 7s season on Saturday.
Norwich fell 20-5 to ETS in its opening match of pool play, tied Ottawa 25-25 in its second match and then fell 20-10 to McGill in its third and final pool play match. The Cadets picked up a forfeit win over Sherbrooke, before battling ETS to a 20-20 tie in the fifth-place consolation match.
Junior Nathan Rolling (Taylorsville, Utah) scored four tries on the day to lead the Norwich offense. Junior Eli Henderson (Covington, Ga.) scored three tries, while Mac Nagel (Lakewood, Ohio) tallied two tries. Korbin Wayton (Highland Village, Texas), Joshua Knoll (Braintree, Mass.) and Josh Johnson (Argyle, Texas) each scored a try as well for the Cadets.
Henderson scored Norwich's line try vs. ETS in the first half but the Cadets trailed 10-5 at halftime. ETS added two more tries in the second half to increase the lead to 20-5.
Norwich took a 15-10 halftime lead vs. Ottawa courtesy of two tries from Nagel and another from Rolling. Wayton and Knoll added second half tries but Ottawa outscored NU by one try to salvage the 25-25 tie.
Rolling and Henderson each scored tries in the first half vs. McGill, but McGill still led 15-10 at halftime before adding another second half try insurance try to pull away fro the win.
Norwich kicked off the knockout stage with a forfeit win over Sherbrooke to advance to the fifth place game. The Cadets battled to a 20-20 stalemate this time with ETS with Henderson and Rolling scoring first half tries and then Johnson and Rolling adding second half tries.
Norwich is off until it travels to Bermuda for the Ariel Re 7s Tournament on Mar. 15 and 16. This will be the Cadets' third trip to the Bermuda 7s tournament.
