ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Norwich University men's rugby team heads to Annapolis, Md. and the United States Naval Academy on Saturday for the 2019 All-Academy 7s Tournament.
This year marks the second annual All-Academy 7s rugby tournament and the inaugural trip to the competition by Norwich. Last year, Army West Point hosted the first Academy 7s Tournament with the U.S. Naval Academy taking home the title.
Norwich carries a 17-4-3 record in spring 7s competition into Saturday's tournament and is fresh off winning its own Chris Munn 7s Tournament for the third straight year. The Cadets have won three 7s tournaments this spring, including the Bermuda 7s, Rugby Northeast and the Chris Munn 7s titles. This weekend will serve as the final tune up for NU before they make their third straight trip to the USA Rugby Division II National 7s Championship in Tucscon, Ariz. on May 24 and 25.
Norwich will face the Navy second side in its first pool play match at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The Cadets will then take on Air Force at 11:30 a.m. to close out pool play. After all nine teams play their two seeding games, the tournament will wrapup with a nine-team bracket to determine the second All-Academys champion.
In the other pools, Navy, VMI, The Citadel comprise pool A, while Army West Point, Navy third side and Royal Military College will make up pool C.
This marks the second time this year that a Norwich University athletic team has been able to compete against all military schools in a one-of-a-kind collegiate championship. The wrestling team hosted the 25th annual All-Academy Wrestling Championships this past January in Plumley Armory for the first time in school history.
