POULTNEY, Vt. - The Norwich University men's soccer team exploded for five second-half goals to pick up a 6-0 victory over Green Mountain College on Monday night in non-conference action.
Senior Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H.) continue his scoring surge, tallying a goal in the fourth straight game and adding an assist as well to lead the Cadets' offense on the night. Zimmerman scored the 44th goal of his career and fifth of the season to bring his career-point total to 97.
Freshmen Ronaldo Powell (Nantucket, Mass.) and Alex Arvizo (Albuquerque, N.M.) each scored their first collegiate goals, while junior Colin Lozito (Wilmington, Vt.) notched two assists. Senior Alec Brigante (Colchester, Vt.) and junior Bryan Mazzola (Ridgefield, Conn.) each scored goals as well to round out Norwich's offense.
Powell opened the scoring in the 17th minute with an unassisted tally. It was the only goal the Cadets could manage in the opening 45 minutes, despite outshooting Green Mountain 27-1 at halftime.
Norwich opened the floodgates in the second however as the Cadets scored three goals in a span of 4:48 to pull away for good. Arvizo opened the scoring at the 53:01 mark, Melia scored a little over two minutes later with an assist from Zimmerman. Zimmerman then scored his fifth goal in the last four games off an assist from Lozito. Mazzola scored in the 67th minute off an assist from Carlos Guerra (Mission, Texas).
Brigante finished off the scoring in the 78th minute with an unassisted goal.
Freshman Alex Grant (South Yarmouth, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate victory without having to record a save. He improved to 1-0-1 on the season.
Norwich (2-2-1, 0-0-1 GNAC) continues its busy stretch of four games in seven days by hosting Plattsburgh State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in its first game of the season on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
