NEWTON, Mass. - The Norwich University men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with Lasell College to open the 2018 season in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Friday afternoon.
Freshman Amerlin Nemeye (Burlington, Vt.) scored his first collegiate goal on a penalty kick with a little over seven minutes to go in regulation. However, the lead was short lived as Lasell responded less than a minute later with a goal off a corner kick by Sawyer Geelan to tie the game.
Neither side was able to score in the golden-goal double overtime and had to settle for a draw to open the season.
Norwich outshot Lasell 21-13, including a 9-2 advantage in the first half. However, the Cadets were unable to score in the opening 45 minutes.
Senior goalkeeper Brendan Germano (Monroe Township, N.J.) made six saves for Norwich.
The Cadets extended their unbeaten streak in GNAC regular season games to 23 straight with the tie. The Cadets are 15-0-8 in that span dating back to the 2015 season.
Norwich (0-0-1, 0-0-1 GNAC) will look to get its first win of 2018 when it hosts NVU-Lyndon on Saturday at 7 p.m. in non-conference action.
