EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Norwich University men's soccer team saw its 2018 season come to a close with a 2-0 loss to Johnson & Wales on Tuesday night in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Semifinals at Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
No. 2-seed Johnson & Wales scored just 4:03 into the game and then never looked back en route to the victory after Norwich had ended the Wildcats' season each of the last two years. The two teams have met in the postseason in five straight years with Johnson & Wales winning the first two in 2014 (Championship) and 2015 (Semifinals). Norwich got revenge in the 2016 and 2017 semifinals, but it couldn't stetch the luck to three straight seasons.
Teagan Drake scored an unassisted goal at the 4:03 mark and then Riley McNicholas added to the lead in the 34 minute with a goal off an assist from Andrew Vecere to account for JWU's scoring in the game.
No. 3-seed Norwich had beaten Johnson & Wales 1-0 in the regular season at Sabine Field, but the Cadets went winless in three straight league games to allow the Wildcats to jump them in the standings and earn home-field advantage for the semifinal round.
Norwich (11-3-4) reached at least the GNAC semifinal round for the 15th straight season and also won 10 or more games for the 13th straight season. Senior goalkeeper Brendan Germano (Monroe Township, N.J.) made four saves in the loss. Senior Ryan Fitzpatrick (Millbury, Mass.) came on for the final six minutes and was untested.
Freshman Alex Brannan (Oneonta, N.Y.) led Norwich with three shots on goal.
