PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Freshman forward Joseph Thongsythavong (Salem, Mass.) scored his first collegiate hat trick to lift the Norwich University men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Plymouth State on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
After a scoreless first half, Plymouth State (1-1) struck first blood in the 50th minute with a header goal on a corner kick from Erik Armskog to take a 1-0 lead.
However, it was the Thongsythavong show from there as he scored in the 56th, 73rd and 77th minute to lead the Cadets (3-1) to the comeback victory.
Thongsythavong tied the game with a volley over the Plymouth State goalkeeper's head off an assist from Amerle Nemeye (Burlington, Vt.).
Thonsythavong added his second of the game and third of the season on a header cross from the left by Nemeye in the 73rd minute to give Norwich a 2-1 lead.
He capped the hat trick just over four minutes later by tapping home a pass from Julius Davis (Peabody, Mass.) to make it 3-1.
Norwich outshot Plymouth State 17-6 in the game and had eight corner kicks to the Panthers' five.
Freshman goalkeeper Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.) stopped four shots to pick up the victory. Linus Lindberg made nine saves for Plymouth State in the loss.
Norwich will travel to Saint Joseph's (Maine) on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff against the three-time defending Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) champions.
