BOSTON, Mass. – The Norwich University men's and women's swimming & diving teams competed in the final day the 2019 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship, hosted by Simmons College, on Sunday.
The Norwich men claimed their second consecutive GNAC crown, recording 317 points while the Cadet women finished fourth with 334 points.
Sophomore Joseph Clark (Acworth, Ga.) won the 200 yard freestyle in 1:51.45 and the 100 yard backstroke in 58.83. Junior Austen Greene (Herndon, Va.) finished just behind Clark in the 100 backstroke, in 57.67. Greene also finished second in the 50 yard backstroke in 26.00.
Junior Alex DiGiacomo (Norfolk, Mass.) finished second in the 50 yard butterfly, posting a time of 24.67 and the 50 yard freestyle as well, in 22.56.
Sophomore Cameron Ferreira (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) won the 400 yard IM in 4:30.07, with freshman Olivia Kelliher (Weymouth, Mass.) taking fourth in the 50 yard backstroke, posting a time of 30.75.
Freshman Gordon Suwirjo (Derry, N.H.) won the 200 yard butterfly in 2:11.77.
All of the first-place finishers were name to the All-Conference squad. Sophomore Joseph Clark scored the most individual points out of all male swimmers at the GNAC Championship with 33 points. DiGiacomo finished in a four-way tie for second with 27 points to help lead the Cadets to the title.
The Cadets are back in the pool on Thursday, February 21st for day one of the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championships hosted by MIT. The event concludes on Sunday, February 24th.
