Swimming & Diving: Cadets Sweep Mariners on Senior Day

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's and women's swimming & diving teams hosted the Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon at Goodyear Pool.

The Cadets swept the Mariners on Senior Day with the men's team taking a 144-80 final and the women's side collecting a 125-79 victory. With the dual win the women's team secured the most meet wins (five) in a season since the 1999-2000 campaign.

The team of freshman Olivia Kelliher (Weymouth, Mass.), fellow freshman Megan Duffy (Shelton, Conn.), senior Kylee Russell (Swanzey, N.H.) and Evy Williams won the 200 yard medley relay in 2:06.68. On the men's side senior Naveed Johnson (Olympia, Wash.), fellow senior Dylan Henderson (Commerce Township, Mich.), freshman Gordon Suwirjo (Derry, N.H.) and senior Matt Clark (Acworth, Ga.) won the same event in 1:43.99. Clark also won the 200 yard freestyle in 1:57.28 and the 100 yard freestyle in 52.08 while Kelliher claimed the 50 yard backstroke in 30.28 and the 100 yard freestyle in 59.44.

Sophomore Cameron Ferreira (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) claimed first in the 1,000 yard freestyle in 10:47.79. Sophomore Hannah Hughes (Fort Belvoir, Va.) won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:24.71 while Duffy took first in the 100 yard butterfly in 1:01.28 and the 500 yard freestyle in 5:28.40. 

Junior Christopher Hughes (Broken Arrow, Ok.) won the 50 yard backstroke in 29.87 with Henderson taking the 50 yard breaststroke in 28.94 and the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:04.59. Suwirjo won the 100 yard butterfly, posting a time of 57.80, and also claimed the 50 yard butterfly in 25.79.  Russell won the 50 yard freestyle in 27.04.

Freshman Brian Parrott (Londonderry, N.H.) took first in the 50 yard freestyle, posting a time of 24.25 while sophomore ReAnn Bowen (Marlborough, Mass.) won the 100 yard backstroke in 1:15.03. 

Johnson also won the 100 yard backstroke in 59.23 while fellow senior Angelia Liu (Yucaipa, Calif.) won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:28.99.

The Cadets are back in action this weekend for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Simmons College. The event will run from Friday, February 1st to Sunday, February 3rd. The Norwich men will seek their second consecutive conference crown while the women aim to improve on their fifth-place finish from last season.
