KEENE, N.H. – The Norwich University men's and women's swimming & diving teams opened their seasons in a tri-match on Saturday afternoon against in-state foe Saint Michael's College and host Keene State.
The Cadet men topped St. Michael's 148-131, but fell to Keene State 188.50-107.50. The NU women's squad fell to Keene State 184-93 and lost by just one point, 135.50-134.50, to St. Michael's.
Sophomore Megan Duffy (Shelton, Conn.) claimed first in the women's 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:42.10 while freshman Nikki Ansley (Berlin, Germany) took the top spot in the women's 200 yard freestyle in 2:04.53. Ansley went on to win the women's 100 yard freestyle race in 56.26 and the women's 500 yard freestyle in 5:45.64. Duffy also finished in second place in the women's 100 yard butterfly race in 1:02.31 and took second in the women's 100 yard IM in 1:05.02.
Junior Joseph Clark (Acworth, Ga.) won the men's 200 yard freestyle in 1:54.05 with teammate, junior Sam Carlson (Dedham, Maine) taking fourth in the same event in 1:57.72. Clark went on to take second place in the men's 50 yard backstroke in 28.11 while Carlson took second place in the men's 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:22.79.
Sophomore Olivia Kelliher (Weymouth, Mass.) finished in third place in the women's 50 yard backstroke with a time of 31.63 while sophomore Michael Kuehne (Auburn, Mich.) placed third in the men's 50 yard breaststroke. Kelliher also tied for third place in the women's 50 yard freestyle in a time of 28.91.
Freshman Derek Furtado (Plymouth, Mass.) claimed third place in the men's 100 yard butterfly, finishing in 57.37. Sophomore Bebe Sullivan (Dallas, Texas) won the women's one-meter diving competition with a score of 137.25, narrowly topping junior Claudia Kearn (Columbia, S.C.), who took second with 137.10 points.
Freshman Jack Brennan (Hopkinton, Mass.) took second place in the men's one meter diving contest with 197.63 and fellow freshman Kevin Gamble (Penn, Pa.) took fourth in his first-ever diving competition, earning 116.02 points. Brennan went on to finish second in his first-ever three-meter diving contest, finishing with 190.20 points.
Senior Alex DiGiacomo (Norfolk, Mass.) won the 100 yard freestyle in 50.88 with Furtado finishing just behind in 52.37. In the women's 50 yard butterfly, junior Keely Purington (Kailua, Hawaii) finished in third place in 31.88.
The Cadets are next in action on Saturday, October 26th for a home dual meet against Colby-Sawyer College. That meet is slated for 1:00 p.m.
