Men’s Tennis: Suffolk bests Norwich, 8-1

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's tennis dropped its third straight match with an 8-1 loss to Suffolk University on Saturday afternoon. 

Freshman Alexi Gilmore (Haverhill, Mass.) continued his remarkable first season in the Maroon & Gold with a victory at No. 2 singles. Gilmore beat Omar Azzaoui in a three-set thriller to improve to 7-1 on the season in singles action. 

Gilmore took the first set 6-2, while Azzaoui came back to take the second 7-5. Gilmore topped Azzaoui 7-6 in the third set with an 8-6 victory in the tiebreak. 

All three doubles matches were tightly contest, however Suffolk prevailed in all three by narrow margins. 

Ariel Ilarslan Russo and Azzaoui downed Gilmore and Dylan Ackerman (Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands) 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Mike DeFelice and Chris Parnagian beat Sam Beiter (Youngtown, N.Y.) and Tripp Wilson (Glastonbury, Conn.) at No. 2 doubles 9-7. 

Rami Esrawi and Kevin Greenman took No. 3 doubles 9-8 (7-4 tiebreak) over Timothy Birnbaum (Mahwah, N.J.) and Noah Stillman (Danbury, Conn.). 

Norwich travels to Johnson & Wales on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match against the Wildcats in a makeup from last Saturday's postponement due to weather. The Cadets close out the regular season with matches against Lyndon State on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and then hosting Johnson State at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
