NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's tennis team concluded the 2018 season on Thursday afternoon with a 9-0 win over Johnson State in non-conference action at Shapiro Field House.
Norwich (6-5) finished the season on a two-game winning streak to get above .500 for the second straight year. The Cadets also swept the season series from the Badgers with the win.
Sophomore Dylan Ackerman (Saipain, Northern Mariana Islands) and freshman Alexi Gilmore (Haverhill, Mass.) led the Cadets for the second straight game, sweeping No. 1 and No. 2 singles and teaming together to take No. 1 doubles. Ackerman beat Gerrit Lane 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles spot, while Gilmore blanked Joseph Holloway 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. The duo combined to beat the Badgers' top duo 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.
Junior Sam Beiter (Youngstown, N.Y.) and freshman Maddy Muthukumaraswany (Montreal, Quebec) swept No. 3 and No. 4 singles with 6-0, 6-0 victories over Quinn Lambert and Evan Daigneault. They also combined to beat Lambert and Daigneault at No. 2 doubles, 8-0.
Freshman Noah Stillman (Danbury, Conn.) and Kyle Larrain (Bordentown, N.J.) took No. 3 doubles and then beat Colin Compagna and Tyler Cirillo at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to cap off the day. Stillman won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and then Larrain won 8-0 in a single set after the match was already decided.
Gilmore finished with a 9-2 record at No. 2 singles to post the most wins in a season in singles action since Jeff Purdy went 9-1 in 2015.
