RUTLAND, Vt. - The Norwich University men's tennis team swept the season series vs. Castleton for the first time since 2015 with an impressive 8-1 victory on Wednesday at the Grand Slam Tennis Center.
Norwich (5-5) swept all three doubles matches and won five of the six singles matches to cruise to the victory and level their record to .500 on the season.
Norwich had some hard-fought tiebreaker wins in singles action, but the Cadets prevailed in every one except No. 1 singles. Senior Sam Beiter (Youngstown, N.Y.) had to dig deep in both of his victories, going three sets to take No. 3 singles 6-2, 5-7 and winning a 10-2 proset to notch the win. He also teamed with Alexi Gilmore (Haverhill, Mass.) to take an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Jared Wheeler and Igor Almeida.
Gilmore was a 7-5, 6-1 winner at No. 2 singles over Wheeler to improve to a team-best 6-4 on the season in singles action.
Stillman won No. 5 singles 6-4, 6-2 to go 2-0 on the day. Freshman Timothy Santy (San Antonio, Texas) returned to the lineup for the first time since before spring break to take No. 4 singles 7-6 a and 6-0.
Norwich opens the GNAC North league season on Saturday, March 23 by hosting Johnson & Wales (RI) at 1 p.m. in Shapiro Field House.
