NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University tennis team fell 8-1 in its first-ever meeting with Springfield College on Sunday morning at Shapiro Field House.
Norwich (6-7) fought hard in two of the three doubles matches, but ultimately fell in each one, including a 8-7 loss at No. 3 doubles by Abbie Barker (Warren, Vt.) and Timothy Santy (San Antonio, Texas).
Sophomore Alexi Gilmore (Haverhill, Mass.) scored the lone win of the day for the Cadets at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Drew Delorenzo. Gilmore improved to 8-5 on the season in singles action with the victory.
Patrick Bulley (Adamstown, Md.) made his collegiate debut, dropping a heartbreaker in three sets at No. 6 singles to Hieu Ton. Bulley won the first set 7-5, then lost 6-2 and 11-9 in a proset for the third set.
Norwich will have two more non-conference intrastate matchups on Tuesday and Wednesday when it hosts NVU-Lyndon on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in Shapiro and then turns around to host NVU-Johnson at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Cadets will continue Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) North play on Saturday, when it travels to Colby-Sawyer College for a 1 p.m. start.
