NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's tennis team secured the season sweep of Northern Vermont University at Johnson with a 9-0 victory on Wednesday at Shapiro Field House.
For the second straight match, Norwich (8-7) used a different lineup allowing different players a chance to play in varsity matches. The results were just as positive as the Cadets secured their second straight 9-0 victory over an intrastate opponent.
Timothy Birnbaum (Mahwah, N.J.) and Sichak won No. 2 doubles with an 8-1 win over Trevor Newton and Donell Shaw. Johnston teamed with Sam Beiter (Youngstown, N.Y.) to take No. 3 doubles 8-0 over Patrick Bell and Garrison French.
Sophomore Abbie Barker (Warren, Vt.) and freshman Timothy Santy (San Antonio, Texas) continued their doubles magic, improving to 5-1 as a team with a 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles over John Folsom and Kenneth Chandler.
Beiter got revenge on Folsom at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory after he lost to Folsom last week in solo action. Santy beat Chandler 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Noah Stillman (Danbury, Conn.) faced one of the stiffest tests at No. 3 singles, winning the first set 6-4 and then cruising to the 6-0 win in the second. Birnbaum finished the day 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Shaw.
Norwich will travel to Colby-Sawyer on Saturday for another GNAC North division match for a 1 p.m. start.
