PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Norwich University men's and women's cross country teams opened their seasons on Saturday afternoon at the Plattsburgh State Season Opener Meet, hosted by Plattsburgh State University.
The Cadet men won the meet with 27 points while the women's side placed second with 39 points. The men edged out host Plattsburgh by one point to claim the team title. The NU men won their opening invitational for the second time in three years after winning the SUNY Canton Kangaroo Classic in 2016.
Junior Adam Saucier (Massena, N.Y.) led the men's squad with a second-place finish in 16:47.90. Senior Brody Hale (Naugatuck, Conn.) placed fourth in 16:57.45 while fellow senior Korey Leonard (Pembroke, Mass.) finished just behind in fifth in 17:12.21. Sophomore William Rapsas (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.) (17:18.67, sixth place) and junior Jack McNally (Nokesville, Va.) (17:28.54, 10th place) rounded out Cadet runners in the top 10.
On the women's side, senior Carisa DeKalb (San Diego, Calif.) matched Saucier with a second-place finish in 20:19.77. Her time was a new personal best by 15 seconds, breaking her previous best at the 2016 GNAC Championship meet. Junior Robyn Hageman (Westlake, Ohio) finished fifth in 21:22.23 while freshman Belle Magna (Canton, Conn.) placed 12th in 22:38.35.
The Cadets are next in action on Saturday, 15th for the Middlebury Aldrich Invitational, hosted by Middlebury College. The men's race is set for 1:00 p.m. with the women's contest slated for 2:00 p.m.
