Softball: Cadets fall twice on Day 2 of Florida trip

LEESBURG, Fla. – The Norwich University softball team fell twice on Day 2 of its 2017 spring break trip at The Spring Games in Florida. 

The Cadets fell 5-1 to SUNY Fredonia in the morning and then followed up with an 8-1 loss to Macalester College (Minn.) in the afternoon. 

SUNY Fredonia improved to 9-4, while Macalester improved to 6-3 on the year. Norwich dropped to 0-4. 

In Game 1, sophomore catcher Madison Miller (Long Lake, N.Y.) stayed hot, going 2-for-4 to lead the Cadets' offense as they outhit the Blue Devils 6-5 for the game. Senior Justina George (Wallingford, Conn.) went 1-for-3 from the leadoff spot and drove in Norwich's only run of the game to score Jess Hindman (Mansfield, Mass.) in the top of the fourth inning. 

That tied the game up at 1-1, but SUNY Fredonia responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, capped by a two-RBI double by Mahogany Barker to score Lauren Pixley and Erin Mushtare. 

Sarah Perry (New Bedford, Mass.), Naomi Rinaldo (Middlefield, Conn.) and Maria Cuccurullo (Brick, N.J.) accounted for the other three hits for Norwich. Cuccurullo's single in the top of the second was her first collegiate hit. 

Sophomore Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) took the loss on the mound, giving up one earned run on five hits and three walks, while striking out two. Sophomore Rachel Johnson (Stockbridge, Vt.) came on for the final 2.2 innings and didn't surrender a hit, striking out five and walking three. 

Emily Shellenberger got the win for SUNY Fredonia, giving up one unearned run on six hits and three walks, while striking out nine. 

In Game 2, Hindman notched the lone hit the Cadets in the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle. Perry was tagged for eight earned runs on five hits and three walks in 1.1 innings to take the loss on the mound for the Cadets. 

Johnson came on to throw the final 5.2 innings, giving up just one hit and five walks while striking out six. 

Norwich will have Wednesday off before returning to action on Thursday when it takes on Framingham State at 8 a.m. and then Olivet at 1 p.m. The Cadets close out their spring break trip on Friday with games against Westfield State and Ripon at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
