PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Norwich University softball team's season came to an end on Saturday morning with a 15-5 loss to Albertus Magnus in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament.
The Cadets (15-21-1) scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Albertus Magnus (29-14) rallied to score 15 straight runs en route to the 15-5 victory in six innings. The No. 4-seed Falcons used a nine-run top of the fifth inning to turn a 5-2 deficit into a 11-5 lead that they would never look back from.
Senior Justina George (Wallingford, Conn.) led the Cadets with two hits in her final game in the Maroon & Gold. Naomi Rinaldo (Middlefield, Conn.), Sarah Peyton (Eagle River, Alaska), Alex Jones (Topsfield, Mass.) and Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) each had RBIs for the Cadets.
Albertus Magnus slowly worked its way back with two runs in the third and then nine more in the fifth, highlighted by a grand slam by Daysia Wehder to make it 6-5 and give the Falcons their first lead of the game.
Sophomore Rachel Johnson (Stockbridge, Vt.) went 4.1 innings on the mound for Norwich, giving up 10 earned runs on 10 hits and six walks while striking out four. She finished the year with a 10-9 record.
