Softball: Miller’s walk off helps Cadets salvage split with Albertus Magnus

Madison Miller softball action vs. Rivier

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Junior catcher Madison Miller (Long Lake, N.Y.) blooped a RBI single into the outfield to score classmate Naomi Rinaldo (Middlefield, Conn.) from third base to lift the Norwich University to a 5-4 walk off victory in Game 2 of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader vs. Albertus Magnus on Saturday.

Albertus Magnus (20-9, 13-3 GNAC) held on to win the first game after Norwich (6-12, 4-10 GNAC) loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't convert and fell 9-7 to the Falcons.

Norwich outhit second-place Albertus Magnus in both games, led by Rinaldo's 5-for-8 day from the plate, including a 4-for-4 effort in Game 1. Rinaldo's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to score Sarah Perry (New Bedford, Mass.) was her 100th career hit for the Maroon & Gold.

Rinaldo nearly hit for the cycle in Game 1, only falling a home run short, while scoring three runs and notching two RBIs.

Junior Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while sophomore Katie Reid (Gold Canyon, Ariz.) went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Albertus Magnus scored three runs in an inning, three separate times to pace its way to the victory.

Perry also went 5-for-8 from the plate as well with two runs scored from the leadoff spot to help lead the Cadets' offense on the day.

In Game 2, sophomore Makenna Wade (Pensacola, Fla.) went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs, while Miller went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Norwich trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning but Wade hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Robyn Cristiano (Robert Lee, Texas) from third. Miller then finished off the comeback with her heroics.

Perry also picked up the victory with a complete-game, 10-hitter to pick up her third win of the season. She gave up three earned runs and walked one to improve to 3-5.

Oliver took the loss in Game 1, giving up 12 hits and seven earned runs to fall to 3-6 on the season.

Norwich broke its eight-game losing streak with the Game 2 victory. The Cadets play another doubleheader on Sunday vs. conference-leading Johnson & Wales at 1 p.m. on the NU Softball Field.

Prior to the game, NU will honor its two seniors in Olivia Bussiere (Northfield, Vt.) and Perry with a Senior Day ceremony.
