NEWTON, Mass. - The Norwich University softball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Confernece (GNAC) doubleheader at Mount Ida College on Saturday afternoon.

Norwich (10-16, 8-14 GNAC) took the first game 4-1, but then dropped a heartbreaker, 4-3 in the second game in walk-off fashion.

With the loss, Norwich was eliminated from the 2018 GNAC postseason. The Cadets will close the regular season on Monday, April 30 when it travels to Regis (Mass.).

Junior pitcher Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) threw one of her best games of the season to pick up her third straight win and improve to 6-7 on the season. She scattered five hits and didn't surrender an earned run while walking two and striking out three.

Sophomore Makenna Wade (Pensacola, Fla.) had two hits and scored a run to lead the Cadets' offense in the opener. Classmate Katie Reid (Gold Canyon, Ariz.) had a RBI, while Brittany Vandergroef (Lodi, N.J.), Sarah Perry (New Bedford, Mass.) and Madelyn Folcik (Wilmot, N.H.).

Norwich scored two in the top of the first and then added two more in the top of the sixth to cap its scoring on the day. Mount Ida added one in the bottom of the sixth to break up the shutout.

Folcik had two hits in Game 2, while Wade had a two-run double to lead the Norwich offense. Perry, Oliver, Reid and Jenna Sprague (Brookfield, Vt.) each had a hit as well.

Perry took the loss in the circle, giving up nine hits on three earned runs and struck out three.

Norwich can finish with the same record as Mount Ida and Lasell for the eighth and final playoff spot. However, the Cadets lose the tiebreakers.
