MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Norwich University softball team closed out its 2019 spring break trip at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic on Friday with a doubleheader split.
Norwich (2-6) opened the day with a big 2-1 victory over Mount Aloysius, who entered the game with an 8-1 record and was an NCAA Tournament team in 2018.
The Cadets outhit Mount Aloysius 9-4 and scored runs in the bottom of the third and the fifth behind a pair of RBI hits from junior Katie Reid (Gold Canyon, Ariz.). Senior Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) took care of the rest in the circle, firing a complete-game four-hitter to shutdown the Mounties' offense.
Mount Aloysius (8-2) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a RBI single up the middle by Caroline Showalter to score Kayla Hopkins.
Reid single to left field in the bottom of the third to score Kelly and tie the game up. She then gave Norwich the lead for good with a single through the right side to score Madison Miller (Patterson, Ga.).
In Game 2, Franciscan (6-3) scored two runs in the top of the first inning and then added three more in the second and four more in the fourth to run away with a 9-1 mercy-rule five-inning victory. Sophomore catcher Elizabeth Niven (Londonderry, N.H.) led the way for the Cadets' offense with two hits, including a RBI single to score Kelly in the bottom of the first to briefly cut the lead to 2-1.
Freshman Adele Cousland (Shutesbury, Mass.) took the loss in the circle for Norwich, getting chased after 3.2 innings and having all nine runs charged to her.
Norwich returns home to play its first games in the Northeast next Saturday at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. when the Cadets host Mass. Maritime in non-conference action on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
