MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Norwich University softball team lost twice on Day 3 of its spring break trip to South Caroilina at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic.
Norwich (1-5) fell 7-2 to Penn College to start the day and then lost a 7-6 heartbreaker to Shawnee State in the second game of the day.
Penn College took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and then never looked back en route to the morning victory. The Wildcats tacked on two more in the fourth and then three more in the sixth to build up a commanding 7-0 lead. Norwich rallied for the two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little too late to make a comeback.
Madison Miller (Patterson, Ga.) led the way with two hits. Freshman Dara Kelly (Chesterfield, N.J.) had a single and a RBI, Elizabeth Niven (Londonderry, N.H.) and Maggie Rasmussen (Kingston, N.H.) each had a hit as well.
Adele Cousland (Shutesbury, Mass.) took the loss in the circle, falling to 0-2 on the season. She went four innings surrendering four earned runs on four hits and four walks.
In Game 2, Norwich fell behind 5-0 in the first two innings, only to rally with a huge six-run third inning to take a 6-5 lead. Shawnee State (9-1) responded with one run in the bottom of the third and then won on a walkoff in the bottom of the seventh.
Miller, Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio), Katie Reid (Gold Canyon, Ariz.) and Kaylee Blanchard (Worcester, Mass.) each had two hits for the Cadets. Blanchard notched a big two-run triple to highlight the best offensive inning of the season for the Cadets.
Kelly, Miller, Reid and Oliver each had RBI hits as well.
Oliver took the loss on the mound, giving up 10 hits and three walks for seven earned runs.
