PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Norwich nearly managed to erase a 15-point deficit in their season opener at Plattsburgh State on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell to the Cardinals by a 59-52 final score.
The Cadets came out cold, as Plattsburgh opened up a 9-0 lead right out of the gate and opened up a lead that rose to 15-points with six minutes remaining in the first half. Norwich showed some early-season toughness at that point, closing out the half on a 13-4 run to cut the lead down to 31-25 heading into the break.
As the fourth quarter began, Riley Bennett (Hopkinton, N.H.) hit a three to finally knot the score up at 42. The score remained tied at 50 with 2:37 remaining, but Plattsburgh turned up the pressure and closed the game on a 9-2 run going 2-2 from the field and 4-4 from the line to seal the 59-52 victory.
Bennett led the Cadets with 17 points, going 7-12 from the field to start her sophomore season. Freshman Mary Casamassa (Wexford, Pa.) put up a 15 point, 10 rebound double-double in her collegiate debut and senior Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) filled the stat sheet with eight points, three rebounds, and three assists along with a perfect 6-6 effort from the free throw line.
Norwich will return home for their next bout when they host New England College on Tuesday afternoon. That game is set to tip off at 5:30 in Andrews Hall Gymnasium.
