NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's basketball team opened up their home schedule on Tuesday evening, falling to the visiting Pilgrims of New England College by a 72-53 final score.
The game was tight through the first half, as the two teams headed into the halftime break with a slim 34-32 NEC advantage. Things unraveled in the third quarter for the Cadets, as the Pilgrims outscored Norwich 23-9 in the quarter to effectively run away with the game. The Cadets endured several cold spells, including one of six and a half minutes in the fourth quarter. It was enough to allow NEC to seal up the 72-53 victory.
Norwich was led once again by freshman Mary Casamassa (Wexford, Pa.) who collected 20 points, three assists, and two steals. Senior Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) pulled down a career-high nine rebounds, while KristieAnn DeSilvio (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded three steals and four rebounds in 19 minutes. The Cadets struggled to find their shooting stroke, putting up a 27.1% (16-59) effort on the night and a 14.2% mark in the second half.
Junior Rene Hudson led New England College with 28 points and eight rebounds, recording 19 of her points in the first half. Daleia Boutwell provided solid minutes off the bench, recording 11 points and five rebounds, as the Pilgrims shot 43.5% from the field and 40% from three.
The loss drops the Cadets down to 0-2 on the young season, while the Pilgrims even their record at 1-1. Norwich returns to action on Thursday night, when they travel to take on the Division I University of Vermont Catamounts in Burlington, a game set to air on ESPN3 and tipoff at 7:00 PM.
