NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Norwich women's basketball team continues to search for their first victory of the 2018-19 season, falling to the Smith College Pioneers by a 73-54 score in the opening game of the Smith College Tyler Tip-Off Tournament.
The Cadets hung with the Pioneers through three quarters, as Naomi Rinaldo (Middlefield, Conn.) hit a jump shot, drew a foul, and hit the free throw as time expired in the quarter to make it 52-42. Things unraveled from there for Norwich, as Smith opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run and outscored Norwich in the quarter by a 21-12 margin to coast to the 73-54 victory.
Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) led the Cadets with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Riley Bennett (Hopkinton, N.H.) put up 10 points. Senior Vanessa Fleury (Lebanon, N.H.) put up eight points and nine rebounds. The Cadets were outrebounded 42-27 and committed 22 turnovers, and put up shooting splits of 38.5/31.3/69.2 as a team.
Norwich falls to 0-4 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow for day two of the Smith College Tyler Tip-Off Tournament. They'll face the loser of the Salve Regina/Hartwick matchup in the third-place game set to start at 2:00 PM.
