BROOKLINE, Mass. - The Norwich University women's basketball team started their 2019 slate of games on Saturday afternoon, defeating Newbury College on the road by a 68-48 final score.
The Cadets never trailed in this one, opening the game on a 28-8 run throughout the first quarter on their way to a commanding 42-23 first half advantage. Norwich shot 71.4% (10-14) in the first quarter and went 4-5 from three-point distance while holding Newbury to just 18.8% (3-16) shooting in the quarter.
Norwich remained in control end-to-end in this one, outpacing Newbury in turnovers (22-13), points in the paint (24-12), and assists (20-10).
Senior Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) led the way for Norwich with a near triple-double of 17 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists along with four steals. Riley Bennett (Hopkinton, N.H.) went 3-6 from three-point land on her way to 13 points, while Kailynne Frederick (Adams, Mass.) proivded nine points and three rebounds off the bench.
The win improves Norwich to 5-6 overall this year, as they've won three of their last four contests. They'll start conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Johnson & Wales for a 5:30 tipoff.
