ADRIAN, Mich. - The Norwich University women's ice hockey team opened the 2017-18 season in the same place its 2016-17 season ended at Adrian College. The Cadets skated to a 3-3 tie vs. No. 5-ranked UW-River Falls on Friday afternoon in the opening game of the inaugural Bulldog Bowl.
Sophomore Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.) and junior Bryn Labbe (Calgary, Alberta) accounted for all the offense. Conway scored twice and had an assist, while Labbe had a goal and two assists to lead Norwich.
Senior Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) made 25 saves in the tie. UW-River Falls won 2-0 in the three-player shootout to advance to the Bulldog Bowl Championship to meet Adrian College. Norwich will face Stevenson at noon in the consolation game.
Labbe put NU up just 2:45 into the game with a power play goal to take a 1-0 lead off an assist from Conway. UW-River Falls tied it up seven minutes later.
The Falcons took a 2-1 lead with a power play goal of their own at the 11:22 mark of the second period. Norwich answered less than a minute later with Conway scoring her first off an assist from Labbe.
Conway scored on the power play at the 9:45 mark of the third period to give NU a 3-2 lead. However, UW-River Falls tied the game back up with 2:42 left in the game.
Neither team scored in the five-minute overtime session to force the shootout.
Norwich outshot UW-River Falls 35-28 in the game.
The Cadets (0-0-1, 0-0-0 NEHC) will meet Stevenson for the first time in program history on Saturday. Stevenson fell 6-0 to Adrian in the other semifinal game.
