NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team exploded for nine goals to rout visiting Castleton University on Tuesday night in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action at Kreitzberg Arena.
Sophomore forward Sophie McGovern (Hermantown, Minn.) scored two goals and notched three assists to tally a single-game career-high five points to lead the Cadets' offense on the night.
Senior forward Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) and sophomore forward Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.) each scored twice, while junior captain Bryn Labbe (Calgary, Alberta) had a goal and three assists to round out the Norwich offensive leaders.
No. 1-nationally ranked Norwich (6-0-1, 4-0-0 NEHC) had 13 players on the scoresheet as the Cadets' extended their unbeaten streak to seven straight games to start the season. NU is now one win away from tying its best start to a season in program history.
McGovern opened the scoring just 19 seconds into the game when she slipped a wrist shot over the shoulder of Castleton starting goalie Alexis Kalm. McGovern took a pass below the left faceoff circle from Labbe and fired it past Kalm from a tough angle along the goal line. Samantha Benoit (Bow, N.H.) picked up her first of two assists on the night by sending the puck deep to Labbe who scooped it up in the corner.
Schwenzfeier made it 2-0 just 41 seconds later to put the Cadets up a pair just a minute into the game off assists from Rossini and Kuhlmann.
Labbe scored with an extra attacker after Castleton was whistled for penalty to make it 3-0 at the 13:37. Labbe tapped home a rebound after an initial save on Conway's tipped shot. McGovern picked up the second assist after taking the initial shot from the middle of the right faceoff circle.
Norwich made it 4-0 at the 16:23 mark of the first period with Brynn Wopperer (Amherst, N.Y.) scoring her first of the season off an assist from KC Herne (Akwesasne, N.Y.). The assist was Herne's seventh of the season. She also extended her point streak to six straight games.
Norwich kept its foot on the gas in the second period, scoring four more times to take an 8-0 lead after 40 minutes.
Schwenzfeier and Maddie Tasha (North Falmouth, Mass.) scored power play goals to book end the second period scoring with even strength goals from Conway and McGovern sandwiched in between.
Conway capped the scoring in the third period with her second of the night at the 12:33 mark with assists from Labbe and McGovern.
Senior goalie Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) stopped all nine shots she faced to pick up her third shutout of the season and 17th of her career, tying Celeste Robert '17 for the most all-time in program history.
Norwich went 2-of-7 on the power play and held Castleton 0-for-3 on the player advantage.
The Cadets return to action on Friday, Nov. 17 when the host Southern Maine at 4 p.m. at Kreitzberg Arena to kickoff Alumni Weekend 2017.
