Women’s Hockey: Norwich blanks Amherst 2-0, King sets career shutouts record

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior goalie Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) stopped all 19 shots she faced to become the new Norwich University women's hockey all-time career shutouts record holder in a 2-0 win over Amherst College on Wednesday night at Orr Rink. 

King recorded her fourth shutout of the season and 18th of her career, to surpass Celeste Robert '17 for sole possession of first place on the program all-time shutouts record. 

Norwich (9-0-1, 6-0-0 NEHC) got goals from Alyssa Hulst (Scarborough, Maine) and Bryn Labbe (Calgary, Alberta) as the Cadets extended their unbeaten streak to start the season to 10 straight games. 

Hulst got the Cadets on the board with at the 9:02 mark of the first period with her eighth goal of the season. Hulst raced towards net on a 1-on-1, slid the puck off the defenders' skate and through the legs of the Amherst keeper to give Norwich an early 1-0 lead. 

That goal held up until the final minute of the third period with Labbe scoring her fifth goal of the season into an empty net to clinch the victory. Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.) picked up her team-leading 19th point along with Desirae Kuhlmann (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) for the assists on the goal. 

King improved to 7-0-1 on the season and lowered her goals against average to 1.24, while raising her save percentage to .936. 

Norwich closes the first semester with a home non-conference game on Sunday, December 10 vs. Conn. College at 4 p.m. in Kreitzberg Arena. The Cadets will host a Teddy Bear Toss with all stuffed animals thrown onto the ice donated to Toys for Tots.
