NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team blanked Salve Regina 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena during the Cadets' 2018 Senior Day game.
Norwich (16-1-2, 9-0-0 NEHC) got a goal and an assist each from juniors Bryn Labbe (Calgary, Alberta), Carly Menges (Novelty, Ohio) and sophomore Alyssa Hulst (Scarborough, Maine), while freshman Nicole Lorenzo (Coral Springs, Fla.) scored her first collegiate goal to lead the Cadets' offense on the day.
After leading 1-0 through two periods, Norwich pulled away in the third period with four goals, including three in a span of 3:23 to sweep the season series from the Seahawks. The Cadets beat Salve Regina (2-18-1) 6-1 earlier this season in Rhode Island.
Lorenzo opened the scoring with what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 14:48 mark of the first period. Lorenzo took a pass from Sophie McGovern (Hermantown, Minn.) and fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Salve Regina's Jennifer O'Connell to take a 1-0 lead. Hulst also notched the secondary assist on the goal.
The Cadets finally got an insurance goal at the 1:11 mark of the third period with Labbe beating O'Connell with a wrist shot short side on the power play. Menges and Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.) picked up the assists.
Hulst made it 3-0 at the 5:20 mark with a goal off an assist from Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.). Hulst beat O'Connell up high for her 13th goal of the season.
Menges increased the lead to 4-0 at the 6:25 mark of the third period off an assist from Labbe. Menges blasted a low slap shot from the point off a faceoff win by Labbe.
Senior Desirae Kuhlmann (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) capped the scoring at the 8:43 mark of the third period with an unassisted tally after she fired a high wrist shot into the net after Salve Regina failed to clear the zone.
Norwich outshot Salve Regina 49-16. Senor goalie Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) picked up the win, stopping all six shots she faced in the first 30 minutes. She improved to 13-1-2 on the year. Freshman goalie Emily Lambert (Riverview, Mich.) came on to make 10 saves the rest of the way and preserve the team shut out.
O'Connell made 44 saves for Salve Regina in goal.
Norwich extended its unbeaten streak to six straight with the victory. The Cadets will have three straight road games next week starting with Castleton on Tuesday. NU will then travel to Plymouth State and New England College on Friday and Saturday.
