NEW YORK – Sophomore forward Sophie McGovern (Hermantown, Minn.) of the Norwich University women's ice hockey team is currently featured in the latest edition of the nationally-acclaimed magazine Sports Illustrated and its popular "Faces In the Crowd" section.
She appears in the April 9th edition that is currently on newsstands now and started hitting subscribers' mailboxes on Wednesday.
McGovern scored the game-winning goal with 1:33 left in the 2018 NCAA Division III women's ice hockey national championship game on March 17 at Kreitzberg Arena to lift the Cadets to a 2-1 victory over Elmira College.
McGovern's goal clinched Norwich its second national championship and first since 2011 in the program's 11-year varsity existence.
McGovern was named the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player as she capped off her second season in a Cadet uniform with 16 goals and a team-leading 29 assists for 45 points to rank second on the team. She has 28 goals and 43 assists for 71 points in 60 games played in her Norwich career.
McGovern's appearance in Faces in the Crowd marks the fourth Norwich University athlete in the last seven years to earn the prestigious distinction. Sophie Leclerc '10 of the women's hockey team also appeared in Faces in April 2011 after leading the Cadets to their first national championship in program history.
Rose Bernheim '13 and Joya Clark '14 of the NU women's rugby team also appeared in October 2012 and May 2014 respectively after setting the new program tries record each time.
