PINE VALLEY, N.Y. - The Norwich University women's ice hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to Elmira College on Saturday afternoon in a rematch of the 2018 NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey National Championship game.
Junior forward Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.) scored both #1/1 Norwich (0-1-0, 0-0-0 NEHC) goals on the day to make a strong statement as the reigning NCAA Division III women's ice hockey goal scoring leader.
#2/3 Elmira got on the board just 16 seconds into the game with Katie Granato scoring her first of three goals on the day as she skated in from the right wing and roofed a shot over the shoulder of NU freshman goalie Alexa Berg (West Fargo, N.D.).
Conway answered at the 7:41 mark of the first period with an unassisted tally to knot the game up at 1-1.
Elmira regained the lead just 27 seconds later with Maddy Jerolman scoring off an assist from Sydney Harris to make it 2-1 Soaring Eagles.
Conway answered again in the final minute of the opening frame off an assist from senior alternate captain Adrieana Rossini (Malden, Mass.).
Neither side was able to pull ahead in the second period with a scoreless middle stanza.
However, Granato took over in the third period with two goals just past the midway point of the period to complete her hat trick at the 10:38 mark and then another 34 seconds later to seal the deal. Granato tapped home a power play goal to make it 3-2 from the top of the crease off a pass from Jerolman from the corner.
Berg made 21 saves in her collegiate debut in goal for the Cadets. Norwich went 0-for-5 on the power play, while Elmira was 1-for-2.
Elmira outshot Norwich 25-24.
