NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team defeated Johnson & Wales University 12-0 on Saturday afternoon in the first-ever meeting between the two schools at Kreitzberg Arena.
No. 4/4 nationally-ranked Norwich (7-2-0, 7-0-0 NEHC) won by the largest margin of victory since a 14-0 win over Plymouth State on Feb. 4, 2012.
Junior Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.) and senior Bryn Labbe (Calgary, Alberta) each had two goals, while senior Adrieana Rossini (Malden, Mass.) dished out three assists to lead the Norwich offense on the day.
Conway had three total points to become just the eighth player in program history to reach the 100 career points milestone. She has 64 goals and 36 assists in 62 career games played.
In goal, freshman Alexa Berg (West Fargo, N.D.) stopped all 13 shots she faced to pick up her first collegiate shutout and improve to 3-1-0 on the season.
Thirteen different NU players got on the scoresheet in the game with freshman defenseman Morgan Tefft (Redwood City, Calif.) opening the scoring with her first collegiate goal at the 3:56 mark of the first period.
Tefft's goal on a failed clearing attempt by JWU was the start of a four-goal first period by the Cadets to asset its control over the game early. Tefft corralled a clearing attempt at the top of the slot and fired a wrist shot through traffic that beat JWU goalie Jasmine Mucci.
Just 26 seconds later Labbe scored her first of the game off an assist from Rossini for a rebound goal to make it 2-0 Norwich.
Conway scored her team-leading ninth and 10th goals of the season at the 6:10 mark and the 14:39 mark to stretch the lead to 4-0. Sophie McGovern (Hermantown, Minn.) picked up the assist on her first goal after he initial shot hit the post and was sitting on the goal line to allow Conway to crash in from the weak side and shovel it home on her back hand into a wide open net.
Sophomore Nicole Lorenzo (Coral Springs, Fla.) hit Conway on a breakaway with a clearing pass from her own zone to setup her second goal. Conway came in all along and slid the puck backhand through Mucci's five hole for her 10th goal of the season.
Norwich added two more goals in the second period to take a 6-0 lead after 40 minutes with goals from Maddie Moell (Clarence Center, N.Y.) and Labbe.
