EAST BOSTON, Mass. - The Norwich University women's ice hockey cemented its strangle hold on the top of the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) with a 4-0 win over second-place Suffolk University on Saturday night.
Norwich (16-4-2, 13-0-1 NEHC) clinched its second straight NEHC regular season title and eight in the last nine years with the season sweep of the Rams.
Junior Brynn Wopperer (Amherst, N.Y.) scored a goal and had an assist to lead the Norwich offense in the victory, while sophomore Emily Lambert (Riverview, Mich.) posted a 22-save shutout for her fourth shutout of the season.
Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.), Sophie McGovern (Hermantown, Minn.) and Alyssa Hulst (Scarborough, Maine) each scored goals as well for the Cadets. Conway scored her NCAA Division III-leading 24th goal of the season to give her 78 goals in 75 career games in the Maroon and Gold.
After a scoreless first period, McGovern opened the scoring at the 9:29 mark of the middle stanza with an unassisted tally for her 10th goal of the year. Hulst added her sixth goal of the season with 37 seconds left in the second period to give Norwich a 2-0 lead heading into the second intermission.
Conway scored her team-leading 24th of the season at the 10:19 mark of the third period with Maddie Moell (Clarence Center, N.Y.) picking up the assist.
Norwich will close the regular season with a busy three-game slate starting with a big non-conference matchup at Middlebury on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in Kenyon Arena. The Cadets will then travel to UMass Boston and Johnson & Wales to close the NEHC regular season on Friday and Saturday.
