BOSTON - The Norwich University women's ice hockey team picked up a 4-1 victory over UMass Boston on Friday night at the Edward T. Barry Rink in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.
Junior Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.) scored a goal and an assist to lead Norwich 17-5-2, 14-0-1 NEHC) to the victory. Sophie McGovern (Hermantown, Minn.), Samantha Benoit (Bow, N.H.) and Jessica Piracini (Arlington, Mass.) each scored goals as well as Norwich swept the season series from the Beacons.
Benoit scored an unassisted tally for her fifth goal of the season to give Norwich a 1-0 lead at the 8:53 mark of the first period. Conway increased the lead to 2-0 at the 11:20 mark of the first period with her team-leading 25th goal of the season.
Piracini scored her third goal of the season off assists from KC Herne (Akwsasne, N.Y.) and Robyn Foley (Goulds, Newfoundland and Labrador) to make it 3-0 Norwich at the 9:32 mark of the second period.
UMass Boston (9-14-2, 5-9-2 NEHC) got one back at the 1:48 mark of the third period to cut the deficit to 3-1. Norwich capped the scoring with McGovern scoring her 11th goal of the season off assists from Conway and Maddie Moell (Clarence Center, N.Y.).
Sophomore goalie Emily Lambert (Riverview, Mich.) made 18 saves to improve to 11-4-1 on the season.
Norwich closes out the regular season on Saturday at 3:55 p.m. when it takes on Johnson & Wales University.
