BOSTON - The Norwich University women's ice hockey team opened New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) play with a 5-1 victory over UMass Boston on Friday night at the Edward T. Barry Rink.
Five different players scored for the Cadets, including three defensemen as NU rode a balanced offense to its first win of the season.
Freshmen Molly Flanagan (Lutz, Fla.) and Mikah Baptiste (Ottawa, Ontario), as well as junior transfer defenseman Kayla Goleniak (Howell, Mich.) each scored their first collegiate goals for Norwich in the victory. Seniors Sophie McGovern (Hermantown, Minn.) and Kirsten Watts (Chugiak, Alaska) each picked up goals for the Cadets' offense, who stretched their unbeaten streak vs. league opponents to 34 straight games.
Flanagan scored her first goal with a shot from the point that deflected off a UMass Boston defender and into the back of the net to increase the Cadets' lead to 2-0 at the 14:17 mark of the first period.
Baptiste increased the lead to 3-0 at the 7:32 mark of the second period with her first collegiate tally in the Maroon & Gold. UMass Boston got one back to cut the lead to 3-1 at the 10:47 mark of the second period with a power play goal from Anna Kehoe.
McGovern upped the lead to 4-1 with 34 seconds left in the second period with her 42nd career goal off an assist from Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.).
Goleniak capped the scoring at the 9:42 mark of the third period off an assist from Ann-Frederique Guay (St-Lambert-de-Lauzon, Quebec).
Sophomore goalie Kate Winstanley (Lansdale, Pa.) made 20 saves to pick up the victory in goal for the Cadets.
Norwich will play its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 12 when it hosts Endicott College at Kreitzberg Arena at 7 p.m.
