CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Norwich University women’s lacrosse team saw its 2010 season come to an end Wednesday afternoon as the Cadets dropped a 19-3 decision to No. 5-ranked SUNY Cortland in an NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament first round game at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.
Cortland State (17-2) advances to the NCAA Tournament regional semifinals at Hamilton College on Saturday, May 15, while Norwich concludes its campaign with a 9-8 overall record.
Jess Fritz paced SUNY Cortland with four goals and two assists, while Lindsay Abbott chipped in three goals and two assists. Kelly Radigan added two goals and two assists for the Red Dragons, who opened up a 12-3 halftime advantage and cruised to the win.
Kacey Abbriano scored two goals to pace the Cadets, while Mollie Fitzpatrick scored one. Suzanne Whitaker was credited with one assist to round out the scoring for NU.
The Red Dragons tallied the first four goals of the contest, before Fitzpatrick scored on a free-position attempt with 20:37 to play in the first half. SUNY Cortland then reeled off six unanswered goals to assume a commanding 10-1 advantage at the 10:14 mark. Abbriano scored twice in the final 8:18 as Norwich pulled to within 12-3 at the intermission.
SUNY Cortland outscored Norwich 7-0 in the second stanza to coast to the 19-3 victory. The Red Dragons held a 39-8 edge in shots, and they won 19-of-24 draw controls.
Norwich goalkeeper Kellie Pickel kept the Cadets in the game, making 15 saves in the Cadets’ cage. Several of her stops came on point-blank attempts, and her efforts certainly kept the score manageable for much of the first half.
