Women's Lacrosse: Cadets storm back in second half to defeat Plattsburgh, 11-10

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Norwich University women's lacrosse team scored six straight goals in the second half to erase the Plattsburgh Cardinals' halftime lead and pull off the 11-10 come from behind win on Monday afternoon.

The Cardinals struck first with a goal less than two minutes into the contest, but freshman Kate Winstanley (Lansdale, Pa.) answered back thirty seconds later with an unassisted goal.  The two teams went back and forth with goals for awhile before Plattsburgh captured the momentum and scored six unanswered goals, only stopped by Emily Schromm (North Attleboro, Mass.) burying a free position shot to trim the Plattsburgh lead to just three goals heading into the halftime break.

Schromm stayed hot in the second half, converting another free position shot to open the scoring in the half and scoring the final two goals on the ensuing 5-0 run by the Cadet offense, giving Norwich the 11-8 lead with 12 minutes remaining. The Cardinals didn't go quietly, notching goals at the nine and six-minute marks to cut Norwich's lead to just a single goal. Norwich's defensive unit managed to stand tall, helped by three saves by Lawson Hayes (Moorestown, N.J.) over the final six minutes to lock up the 11-10 win.

Another big offensive day for the Cadets resulted in a handful of standout performances for the maroon and gold. Emily Schromm led the way with four more goals, and Kate Winstanley continued the torrid start to her freshman campaign with three goals and an assist for a four-point day. Missy Preul (Scottsdale, Ariz.) picked up two more goals, while Brittney Poljacik (Woodstock, Vt.) and Abby Roberts (Passumpsic, Vt.) tallied a goal each to round out the Norwich scoring. Lawson Hayes made 10 saves on 20 shots on goal to pick up the win in net.

Back-to-back wins lift Norwich to a 2-0 record in the young 2019 season. They'll put their spotless record on the line Wednesday night at Rivier, where they'll take on their conference foe at 5:00 PM.
