WESTON, Mass. - The Norwich University women's lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Pride of Regis College by an 11-4 final score.
The Regis offense found their stride late in the first half, as they rattled off three goals in the final five minutes to break the game open and carry a 6-0 lead into the halftime. Mary-Kait Mace (Canton, N.Y) broke Norwich's offensive dry spell right away in the second half, notching an unassisted goal a mere 0:35 into the half. The two teams went back and forth trading goals throughout the half, and Norwich couldn't put together enough of a run to overcome the Pride, who walked away with the 11-4 victory.
Mace, Brynn Mendes (Centerville, Mass.), Emily Schromm (North Attleboro, Mass.), and Kate Winstanley (Lansdale, Pa.) filled out the score sheet for Norwich with a goal each, while Mace added in an assist for a two-point day. Free position shots doomed the Cadets, as they went just 1-10 on the day.
The first loss of the year snaps Norwich's best start to a season since 2012, as their overall record falls to 3-1 overall and 2-1 within the conference. They'll be back in action on Wednesday afternoon against the Colby-Sawyer Chargers, in a game set to be hosted by the Chargers at 4:00 PM.
