LYNDONVILLE, Vt. - The Norwich University women's lacrosse team closed out their regular season road schedule with a commanding 21-3 victory over Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Monday afternoon, highlighted by freshman Brynn Mendes breaking the single-game draw controls record.
The goals came early and often for the Cadets on Monday afternoon, as a 15-1 first half put the game well out of reach and a 6-2 second half punctuated the affair as Norwich cruised to the 21-3 victory. The Cadets improve their overall record to 6-8 with the road victory, and wrap up their road schedule for the regular season with a 6-4 record as the visitors on the year.
Brynn Mendes (Centerville, Mass.) put forth the best draw control performance in Norwich women's lacrosse history, shattering the previous record of 10 set in 2013 by Grace Fitzpatrick '14 with 15 on the afternoon. Her 57 draw controls on the season already rank as the fourth highest single-season total in program history. For good measure, the freshman put up a game-high five points with four goals and an assist.
Kate Winstanley (Lansdale, Pa.) put up a hat trick and an assist in her return to the attack after a stretch in goal for the Cadets. Michaila Furchak (Nyack, N.Y.) and Mary-Kait Mace (Canton, N.Y.) each had a pair of goals to round out the offensive leaders for Norwich. Defensive standout Brittney Poljacik (Woodstock, Vt.) put up a career-high four caused turnovers, as Norwich outshot the Hornets by a 40-5 margin.
The maroon and gold will now host Simmons University on Wednesday at 4:00 PM. A game with playoff seeding implications, it will also serve as Senior Day for the Cadets and their regular season finale.
