NORTHFIELD, Vt. – For the first time in the institution's history, Norwich University is proud to announce it will host the 25th-annual All-Academy Wrestling Championships on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019.
"We are extremely excited to be hosting the All-Academy Championships here at Norwich University and to have such prestigious military institutions on our campus," Director of Athletics Tony Mariano stated. "It will provide us the opportunity to not only showcase Norwich wrestling but also competition against Division I and Division III military wrestling programs. This tournament will also provide the wrestling fans in Vermont the opportunity to see great wrestling by some outstanding student-athletes."
The Cadets will host grapplers from all five of the Nation's service academies (United States Military Academy, Naval Academy, Coast Guard Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, Air Force Academy) along with The Citadel and the Virginia Military Institute in a one-of-a-kind wrestling championship.
The annual event affords Norwich an opportunity to compete against NCAA Division I wrestling programs while also taking on the top Division III talent from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the Coast Guard Academy. The championship always concludes with an end-of-day banquet to celebrate the common bond of military service.
"The All-Academy tournament is a one of a kind tournament and wrestling is the only NCAA sport with an opportunity like this," Norwich wrestling head coach Alex Whitney said. "It is an honor to host it for the first time on our campus and know that it will be an amazing opportunity for the Norwich and Vermont community to see such a high level of wrestling on our campus."
The tournament debuted in 1995 following years of planning by The Citadel's Ken Shelton and Army's Jack Effner where the former dreamed of an event where institutions with strong military ties could come together and compete for team and individual honors.
The US Naval Academy has claimed 14 of a possible 24 championships since the championship's inception, including last year's championships hosted by The Citadel. While an NCAA Division III institution has failed to claim a team title, Norwich's Chad Sinclair '02 won the individual title at 149 lbs. for the Cadets in 2000. The best ever team finish for Norwich was fifth place (1995, 1996, 1998, 2000).
The tournament will be covered and broadcasted by Norwich University in its entirety. More information will be released as the date draws closer, please stay tuned to the Norwich Athletics website for updates.
