Indianapolis, Ind. - The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released the brackets for the 2019 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships set to take place on March 9th in Roanoke, Virginia on Monday evening.
Norwich's first National Championship qualifier since 2008, senior Jacob Forsman (Voorhees, N.J.), is set to take on the number eight seeded Jake Giordano from the College of New Jersey in his first-round matchup.
Forsman put together a performance for the ages at the NCAA Regionals to reach the Championship Tournament. The unseeded Forsman started his day with a victory over #3 NEWA ranked Brad Beaulieu of Southern Maine (Fall 3:30), continued with a win over #5 NEWA ranked Tristan Stetson of Wesleyan (Dec. 9-4), and culminated with a victory #2 NEWA ranked and #10 NCAA ranked Michael Gonyea of Castleton University to secure an automatic spot at the NCAA Championships. He finished his day with a championship bout against #1 NEWA ranked and #4 NCAA ranked Bobby Jordan of Johnson & Wales, who managed to finally stop Forsman with a 20-10 major decision victory.
His opponent, sophomore Jake Giordano, is one of five wrestlers from the number 13 nationally ranked College of New Jersey. Giordano is making his National Championships debut after winning by decision in each of his two bouts on Championship Sunday at the NCAA Mideast Regional on his way to the 133-lb title. He has posted a 25-3 record this year.
Forsman and Giordano are set to grapple on the morning of March 8th, with the winner taking on the victor between number one seeded Jordin James of Mount Union and Levi Englman of the host Ferrum College.
