SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Norwich University wrestling team engaged in its first dual match of the season when it took on Western New England University on Friday evening. The Cadets tried to battle back from an early deficit, but the WNE lead proved insurmountable in the end as Norwich fell 26-19.
Western New England (1-0) captured its first victory of the season while Norwich (0-1) suffered its first loss of the 2019-20 campaign.
The Golden Bears captured the first bout of the night when Corey Cope won a 12-3 major decision over CJ Beeghley (Harrisburg, Pa.) at 125 pounds. Nicholas Arborio and Justin DeLucia earned the hosts another four points each with another pair of major decisions. Arborio defeated the Cadets' Cameron Wooldridge (Roanoke, Va.) 15-7 at 133 pounds, while DeLucia emerged from his match with Norwich's Drake Troyer (Lakewood, Colo.) at 141 pounds with a 19-6 score.
The Cadets got on the board at 149 pounds when Ben Forsman (Voorhees, N.J.) racked up four points with a 19-6 major decision win over Ryan Tripodi.
WNE's Ryan Monteiro increased the hosts' lead to 17-4 as he won by technical fall over NU's Cody Lewis (Kingston, N.H.). The Golden Bears' Alex Starr registered six points for his pin of the Cadets' Cameron Smith (Duxbury, Mass.).
NU's Niko Chitty (Coral Springs, Fla.) returned the favor grabbing six points of his own when he pinned WNE's Alec Arnold at 174 pounds. Norwich's Daniel Curran (Peterborough, N.H.) used a pair of takedowns and three escapes to build an early lead and then hung on for an 8-6 decision over Davey Goodall at 184 pounds to bring the Cadets within 23-13.
Gabriel Duden (LaGrange, N.Y.) battled Daniel Price even before falling in overtime by sudden victory, 8-6, at 197 pounds.
NU's Michael Wagner (Tyngsborough, Mass.) closed out the match at 285 pounds by pinning his WNE opponent Romelo Medina at the 2:33 mark.
The Cadets are back in action on November 15-16 when they travel to the Roger Williams Invitational in Rhode Island.
