Women's Rugby: Cadets advance to NE region final

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Norwich University reached the finals of the 2011 USA Rugby DII Northeast national qualifying tournament Nov. 5 with a 58-0 win over Bowdoin.  With the victory and a 20-19 win by Vassar in the other semi-final, the Cadets will face for Vassar for the title Sunday, Nov. 13.

Both teams came out strong, and Bowdoin seemed to control the ball and territory early on.  A turnover and counter-attack from the Cadets sent sophomore fullback Joya Clark (Scotia, N.Y.) into space.  Clark kicked ahead and was impeded near the goal-line by a Bowdoin defender.  For tackling a player without the ball, the Bowdoin player was given a yellow card, and Norwich capitalized on the 10-minute advantage.  A perfectly executed backline move from the ensuing scrum sent sophomore center and team leading scorer Jackie Derocher (Northwood, N.H.) in for the first try of the match, 9 minutes into play.

Just three minutes later, junior wing Adria Pickin (Homestead, Fla.) caught up to an attacking kick from flyhalf Emily Baugus and raced in for the try.  And 5 minutes later, Clark countered another kick to score her first of 3 tries in the match.  With two conversions from junior flyhalf Emily Baugus (Kingsville, Texas), Norwich blasted off 19 points during the man-up advantage.

Sophomore prop Baylee Annis (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) scored after getting wide and supporting junior wing Andrea Vogt at the 30 minute mark.  Pickin and Derocher each added additional tries in the last few minutes of the half.

Bowdoin adapted defensively at the half and gave Norwich the single toughest half of play they've faced all season.  A drop goal from Baugus was the only difference in the second half score for the first 29 minutes of the half.  Finally junior lock Corinne McElroy (Canaan, N.H.) broke through the tough Bowdoin line for the try.  Clark raced in for 2 more tries in the final 10 minutes.

With a five-of-nine kicking performance and a drop goal, Baugus crossed the 300 point threshold for her career.  She becomes the second player in Norwich history to reach this milestone and is 2 points away from becoming the all-time leading scorer.

"Bowdoin gave us a great match," said NU head coach Austin Hall.  "We played the best rugby we've played all year in the first half.  Tomorrow's the big day...playing Vassar on their home turf.  We will bring everything we've got and look to enjoy our final 80 minutes of rugby in what has been a phenomenal season."
