Women's Rugby: Cadets win showdown for league supremacy

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The women's rugby team battled rain, mud, cold winds and a tough Rhode Island side over Alumni weekend and came away with a 34-0 victory.  Coming into the match URI and NU were tied for the lead in NERFU standings, but it was Norwich who edged ahead to take sole possession of the lead.

Scoring started early in the first half when team captain, Katie Hathaway crashed through the defensive line from just 5 meters out.  With 6 tries on the regular season, Hathaway leads the league in try scoring.

A long rush, that started well in Cadets' territory ended in the hands of junior wing Andrea Vogt who touched down for the second score.

Freshman center Vanessa Champagne scored the third try on the day through good ball movement from the team.  Champagne glided through the remaining defenders to finish a strong attack from the Maroon and Gold.

With one successful conversion from junior Emily Baugus, the Cadets took a 17-0 lead in to the half.

The second half saw sophomore fullback Rose Bernheim take advantage of the URI kicking game.  Bernheim scored early on a long run and countered a number of the kick efforts URI provided.

The try of the day came from Bernheim as well.  Sophomore center Jackie Derocher made a piercing run through the middle of the defense only to be tackled about 15 meters from goal.  Derocher offloaded from the ground to Baugus, who was playing in her first game as a flanker.  Baugus nearly touched down on the goal line and Bernheim was there to finish the play.  Bernheim now leads the Cadets in overall tries scored with 9 on the season.

Junior wing Adria Pickin raced in for a try late in the game to solidify the victory.

"I was most impressed with our defense in today's game," said NU coach Austin Hall.  "URI had us with our backs against the wall on multiple occasions, but we trusted in ourselves and continued to play on our front foot even when we didn't have the ball.  The mud and rain provided for some sloppy play at times, but we took the opportunity to work on our scrums against the strong URI pack and we gained something in that department."

Norwich (3-0 NERFU, 8-1 Overall) travel to Coast Guard Academy on October 8 for their next match.
