NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich field crews were up early Oct. 30 to clear the rugby field of the snow that hit the northeast hard. Once the lines could be seen, kick-off commenced on the snow covered field. Shaking off frozen toes and fingers, 30 warriors took to the field for an outstanding match in miserable conditions.
Norwich struck stormed into play with a try just two minutes into the match. Sophomore center Jackie Derocher sped past her opposite number for the opening score. Derocher, who leads all Norwich players in points scored this season, went on a scoring spree with two additional tries in the first half of play. Her third try of the game, scored as the first half ended was the try of the match as the backline executed a flawless attacking option to release her Derocher into free space.
Joining Derocher with a try in the first half was Sophomore fullback Rose Bernheim. Bernheim added another in the second half as well, to up her team and league leading try tally to 17.
"What a blast to watch two hard-nosed teams duke it out in the snow and mud," said NU head coach Austin Hall. "Coast Guard is the toughest, best defensive team we've played and this was a sluggers kind of day. They'd given us trouble the first time we played them this year and this second time around, we had to go even deeper into our arsenal."
Norwich will host SUNY-Binghamton in the quarter-finals of the national qualifiers this weekend. Game date and time to be posted soon.
