Athletics: Norwich Wrestling and Rugby Compete Together for Mad River Rugby

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - This summer, the Norwich wrestling coaching staff of Alex Whitney and Connor Keating have joined the Mad River Men's Rugby team coached by Norwich Women's rugby head coach Austin Hall.

Sporting a 6-1 record so far this summer, the Mad River team captured the coveted "Cabot Cheese Grater" trophy at the second annual Cabot Cup Championship with a 12-3 victory over rival club Burlington in the final. The team also features Norwich men's rugby junior Harry Losobo.

Whitney, Keating, Losobo, and Hall helped get Mad River off to a hot start with a dominating 41-5 over Rutland to open their season before traveling to Delaware to competed in the Son of a Beach tournament. The boys notched victories over teams from Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey before losing in the final to the North Philly Irish by a 10-5 score.

"Connor has found a home in the 7 jersey and rips up the rugby field with the same intensity he rips up the wrestling mats," said NU and Mad River Coach Austin Hall. "Alex had a remarkable opening performance on the field at the Cabot Cup. Apparently he has some rugby in his lineage, though he hasn't found the handling bit yet. And course Harry, he's a blast to have on the team... though it's hard to keep track of him with all his speed."

The Mad River team will be hosting their own tournament at the Polo Grounds in their hometown of Stowe, Vermont on June 30th.
